Dragon Con 2016 – Birth of BootyV
There’s so many cons that happen all year round, especially on Labor day. With so many choices why do I choose to go to DragonCon each year? It’s easy for me, it’s a con that’s more of a mid year break and a cutting loose of nerds from around the country and globe. A lot of cons are just filled with great things to see and do all day, but how many involve all-day parties? Not many. I’ve travelled to so many cons that many feel similar. I love all the cons I attend don’t get me wrong, but when one comes around that’s just more about getting to hang out all day with a great group of people there to party and have a good time it’s an easy choice. Yes, I want to eventually check out Toronto Fan Expo and PAX Prime, but while they share the same weekend with DragonCon, they will always lose.
If partying isn’t your thing, and it’s not usually mine, then there’s so much more to Dragon than just that. Dragon is a con that brings some of the most creative costumes out of our little community. Also, what other con has a parade to start off a Saturday? There are so many panels and things to do at Dragoncon that you can find something for almost everyone. It’s another one in a dying breed of hotel conventions. It’s also one of those cons that if it changed venues, it would never be the same. You don’t have to worry about trying to get a badge, since I’ve never had an issue buying one whether months in advance or just a couple of weeks out. I would almost say this con takes over almost all of downtown Atlanta, more than just the host hotels.
There are so many reasons I choose this convention each year, but cosplay and the people I get to meet are the main reasons. This con is where you can randomly run into people like Joey Fatone and Xavier Woods among many amazing cosplayers and prop builders. If you go to places like SDCC, you have a hope to run into someone amongst the troves of people running around. Dragon feels much more personal and fun while dealing with huge amounts of people. I’ve met so many more people at this con that have been instrumental in my life. I will always say that not every con is for everyone. This might not be a con for you or you might not have the fun I do at the con and that’s fine. We all have different tastes in what we’re looking for in a con.
This year in DragonCon cosplay was nothing to be sold short. There are always so many cosplays that I couldn’t and wouldn’t be able to see. This is just as much a cosplay convention as Katsucon and Anime Expo. But here you’ll find some really creative cosplays for drinking. The way people integrate this type of thing is amazing. Drinking isn’t for everyone, but you have to respect their ingenuity in adding this component into a cosplay. Besides getting to meet amazing people in one of the more relaxed con environments, there’s amazing sessions all around. This year the big talk was the Egg Sister’s Reinhardt. I couldn’t get anywhere near to seeing this in person, since I heard about it late in the only day it was worn. 🙁 I’m hoping this coming year I’m able to see whatever they’ve come up with next. These cosplayers are amazing, everyone should go follow them because they’re oozing talent!
This year we had an amazing photography team stay in our room with us. If they hadn’t stayed with us, we would have never probably met. Their work is amazing and they work throughout the night at a con to get photos to the people who were lucky enough to get to shoot with them. Who am I talking about? AotC? Nope! I would never talk about myself like that! I’m talking about the Ambercool team. They are comprised of a couple of photographers and at least one videographer. They produce some amazing videos of the cosplay, along with stunning images.
Getting to hang out with them was one of the highlights of the convention, besides getting to drink moonshine with some pretty awesome people, vikings and famous people. Now back to Ambercool. While hanging out and taking photos of the lovely Reagan Katheryn, a name was born in infamy. What’s that name you say? Well that’s Booty V! It’s more of an inside joke, but that’s how great friendships are born, right? Let’s just say that we wouldn’t have had such a great time without Booty V and the Ambercool team to hang out with. The Long-Legged Booty shot would have never been born without them and Reagan as well.
You never know who you’ll meet at a convention and who’ll impact your lives from those meetings. That’s why I’ve always said that to get out to a convention. We’re all nerds and there’s so many great, inspirational and amazing people at a con, you just have to get out there and experience it for yourself. The people I’ve met have accumulated over a long time. I spent many cons by myself, but eventually I began to meet more and more people. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t meet people you connect with right away. Sometimes it takes a little longer, so keep your mind open and have a great time!
If you can ever make it to this con, I recommend it!
